Its one of these outcrops that William has chosen to paint, with a masterful economy and artistry, one cold snowy morning. The willowy branches of the trees writhe up out of the grey stones and white snow below them, while, to the left of the picture, Helm Crag is visible glowing golden in the ebbing late afternoon sunshine.
